A press release, a studio social post or an on-stage reveal. This is the only stage we mark green.
Who is in, who is reported, and which roles are still under wraps — with the source of each claim.

Trade reportedVariety, Deadline or The Hollywood Reporter break the news first. Usually right, but not yet official.
Casting news usually moves through four stages, and each deserves a different level of trust. First comes the rumour: a name attached to a project on social media or a fan site, often without a source. Some rumours are accurate; many are guesses. We do not list rumours.
Second comes the trade report. The Hollywood trade outlets — Variety, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter — publish casting exclusives sourced from agents, producers and studios. Phrases matter here. "In talks" means negotiations have started; "in final negotiations" means a deal is close; "has joined" or "is set to star" means the deal is done. Trade reports are generally reliable, but deals do fall apart, scheduling clashes happen, and a role reported as one character can turn out to be another.
Third is studio confirmation. Studios confirm cast in press releases, on official social channels and at events such as San Diego Comic-Con, D23 and CinemaCon. Marvel Studios turned this into a show in March 2025, revealing much of the Avengers: Doomsday cast through a livestream of named chairs. A confirmation at this stage is what we label "Confirmed".
Fourth is the character reveal, which often comes much later — sometimes not until the trailer or even the film itself. Studios protect character identities to avoid spoilers, so "role undisclosed" is a common and perfectly legitimate status.

Final billing — the order of names on the poster — is negotiated contractually and published closer to release. It is not a reliable guide to screen time. Cameos are deliberately kept secret, and studios occasionally deny them right up to opening day. Reshoots can add or remove characters late in post-production; when that happens, a confirmed cast member can be cut from the final film. We update strips when the studio says so, and add a note when reporting suggests a change.
Casting is not just gossip; it is a production signal. A lead cast announced means a film is close to cameras rolling. A wrap announcement starts the post-production clock, which for effects-heavy films commonly runs a year or more. Watching the cast stage alongside the release calendar is one of the best ways to judge whether a far-off date is realistic.
