RELEASE QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Short answers for release-watchers. Follow the links for the full desk guides.
Dates
Why do release dates change so often?
Production delays, reshoots, visual effects schedules and competition from other films can all move a date. Dates set far in advance move most often. See the calendar guide.
Is a US release date the same in the UK and elsewhere?
Not necessarily. Many studio films open the same weekend, but some territories open earlier or weeks later. Check the local distributor or cinema.
When do tickets go on sale?
Usually a few weeks before release, often alongside the final trailer. Event films and IMAX showings can open pre-sales months ahead.
Trailers & cast
How do I know a trailer is official?
It is published by the studio or distributor on its own website or verified channels and normally ends with a dated title card. See official sources.
What does "in talks" mean in casting news?
Negotiations have started but no deal is signed. Only a studio announcement confirms casting.
Previews & reviews
What is a review embargo?
An agreed date and time before which critics who attended press screenings may not publish full reviews.
Are first reactions reliable?
They are an early signal from invited audiences and tend to be positive. Wait for full reviews for a balanced view.
What does a Rotten Tomatoes score measure?
The share of approved critics whose review is positive, not how positive the reviews are. More in previews.
